Today we celebrate Juneteenth as well as a historic moment in the U.S. — the first Juneteenth to be recognized as a federal holiday in all 50 states.
June 19—or "Juneteenth"—is an important holiday, as it marks the official end of slavery in the U.S.
While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, slavery continued on in Texas and didn't end until 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston.
The following year, freedmen organized the first "Jubilee Day," which would become an annual celebration on June 19 and grow across the U.S.
Today we celebrate Black heritage and we honor Black history.
