Happy Juneteenth!
Today, we celebrate the official end of slavery in the United States.
Though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, slavery continued in Texas until 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston to read General Orders No. 3: "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free."
The following year freedmen organized the first "Jubilee Day," which would become an annual celebration on June 19 and spread across the U.S. In 2021, President Biden signed the Juneteenth Independence Day Act, officially recognizing June 19 as a federal holiday.
